The Cradle of Humankind is a region near Krugersdorp (about 50 kilometres north west of Johannesburg) which has been declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its archaeological and anthropological importance. It covers approximately 474 km² and includes fascinating sites such as Maropeng, the entire region at Kromdraai and the famous Sterkfontein Caves which were first discovered in 1896.
